After reading this article in the Mirror and learning about Reform UK’s actions, I decided to donate to the Feed a Child This Summer campaign, even though I live hundreds of miles away.
This situation feels like an echo of the past and the days of “Thatcher, the milk snatcher”. It seems the one lesson we repeatedly learn from history is that we have not learned from history at all.
Well done, Barry Ashley. You have my support and my donation. Thank you also to the Mirror for bringing this campaign to my attention. No child should go hungry during the school holidays. Please share this site on social media like Facebook and LinkedIn so more money can be raised in this way.

Keep up the great work. At least someone is showing some compassion and leadership in the area.
Steve –
Keep up the fantastic work!
Nick Keir (verified owner) –
I don’t live in the area but my mum was from Rotherfield and I spent a lot of time around there. I don’t know how these people came to be running the council, but I love what you’re doing to counter it and very happy to make a donation to help you continue.
Charles Pearman –
Appalling that local business owners have to fight the foul influences on their local council in order to help struggling families eat. I hope other communities see news of this case and reflect upon which party they choose to vote for in the local and national elections.
Mark Williams (verified owner) –
I saw what your council is doing and immediately donated a few quid, though I live 150 miles away, and have shared your donation page on social media so others do the same.

Hi Mark, thank you for your donation, and your comments it really means a lot.

Read the article, sent some money. Keep up the excellent work, I hope you’re inundated with pay it forward meals.
May Brooks (verified owner) –
I read the article and was so moved by what you are doing that I needed to donate despite living nowhere near.
Keep up the good work! Nice to know there are still people with humanity out there ❤️
Count Binface –
Keep up the good work, earthling! I tried to get Farage to donate but he said something about boats.
Paul Wilson –
I won’t donate to this scheme (I’m sure you’ll get plenty doing so). Instead, I’ll try to find something similar locally to donate to. Thanks for doing this. It’s a shame that our society has got to the stage that this is necessary – especially in council areas where Reform are doing well.
Janice –
In honour of my three grandchildren to help other children.
Mike & Camille DWC Magazine –
No child should go hungry. Thank you so much for what you are doing. Donated and we’d also love to interview / feature this.

I read the article about you donating free meals to children. What a kind, selfless thing to do, so thank you for what you are doing!
Rachel –
Only sorry I can’t donate more!
Bit if what I can spare can go towards p*ss*ng off Reform a little bit more I’ll gladly help.
Absolutely disgusting that they don’t want children to be helped.
Stephanie –
Keep up the good work, hope all the publicity helps with donations. I’ve shared on my page and hopefully others will too x
anna (verified owner) –
Thank you for your love and care towards hungry children.
I’m happy to contribute to your wonderful and practical initiative.
Euan Webster (verified owner) –
Just keep up the good work Barry. Happy to donate to help your efforts.
Natalie Mark (verified owner) –
I have made a donation. It breaks my heart that any council would choose to take away food from children during the school holidays. They clearly have no idea of what it feels like to be starving as a child. I can tell them, it’s awful!
In 2026, no child should be going hungry. It is a disgrace to this country. No adult who willingly deprives children of food should be in power. Thank you for all you are doing to support children to stay healthy and well during the holidays.
Vaso –
Proudly donating! What a brilliant cause – keep going!
James (verified owner) –
Keep up the excellent work! Happy to make a small contribution.
Dawn KP –
I live in North Yorkshire and am happy to donate to support this amazing business to feed their local kids,
Sandra (verified owner) –
What a brilliant initiative to step in and support struggling families when those who should be doing it fail to care. The local council should be ashamed. These people are not fit to govern in any capacity whatsoever. Well done!
Jude –
Very happy to donate to this important campaign. Sending love from Surrey.
Marion –
So important to stand up to these bullies. I’m not local but happy to donate
Janis Handscombe –
I don’t live in your neck of the woods but I’m appalled, if not surprised, by reform councillors actions. Just a small token to help you keep doing what you’re doing. Well done The Grumpy Cook.

Katja Stevens (verified owner) –
Thank you for being the person every community so desperately needs.
Jo –
I don’t live near Hastings, but I donated anyway. There should be more of these in our communities
Shay –
Donated because of the news. Keep feeding the children
Ben Brooks –
Sometimes the meals that school offers are the only food a child will get to eat in a day. Taking that away is absolutely disgraceful. Also from a safeguarding standpoint, these kids will have no one to ensure they are okay. What you are doing is fantastic! The world needs more people like you. Regards
Stu –
Why do they always target the most vulnerable in society? No child should be hungry, no matter the reason. Glad to see there are people like you doing your bit
G A Williams (verified owner) –
Just donated. We live in Milton Keynes and remember what great work you did hear to support families who were struggling. Keep doing what you are doing and ignore this ridiculous threat
Elizabeth Smith (verified owner) –
Well done Barry! I too live a long way from Hastings but I was impressed by your principled stand against this bunch of ignorant shysters. Keep up the good work!
Helen Jones –
Well done for stepping up when others look away. Wish there were more like you xx lots of love from France.
Susan Hutchings –
just heard that you are providing meals during the holidays – great compassionate initiative made all the more important by some local politicians being against providing hungry children with food. What a very strange mentality! I no longer live in UK but am very happy to donate. Thank you for your strength and godd values
Christine Sweeney –
After listening about this wonderful and sadly much needed initiative on James O Brian how could you not donate ? Thank you for doing it. Wish we had this in the North East too but when you think about it how on earth is this needed in our rich country ? Wheres all the money going and whose granbibg it ?
Neil (verified owner) –
Just listened to you on LBC and decided to make a donation. Keep up the hard work.
Paul Fallon (verified owner) –
I’m appalled by the actions of the Reform councillor and am happy to donate to help out.
Mark (verified owner) –
Heard you on LBC today, I was moved by your conversation. Shame on the Council and very well done you. I am not local but have made a donation. Anyone listening to the conversation would donate if they are able to.

Dont live in the area but after seeing the lengths this business are going to, to ensure children in poverty can at least get a nutricious breakfast or lunch then i simply had to donate and take part. Thank you Grumpy Cook for having more morals than even the leaders of the local council. You Sir are a hero.
vojohmtlzb –
Thank you for your lovely comments and your donation. It will go towards helping our local children get fed during the summer holidays. The response has been amazing.
Best Wishes
Barry
Barry Andrews (verified owner) –

Just watched you on YouTube with James O’Brien. Good on yer Barry. We need more people like you. All the best.
Josh Vinall –
I might not ever visit this cafe, as I live in the Midlands, but respect to them. They care about other humans, especially the vulnerable. Unlike Reform. Vote Count Binface !
Helen –
I saw Simon Harris’s post on FB about your response to your reform councillor’s threat to call the police on you. He told us all NOT to donate, DON’T share, DON’T comment or like his post. So I did exactly what he said and didn’t just send 30 quid to your fundraiser.
You don’t fight fire with fire. You fight fire with water, fight hate with love and hunger with food. Top man. ❤️
Andre Murrell –
What a wonderful initiative, despite Reform’s attempt to form division in this country and in your council, I’m so pleased there are humans like yourself who represent the good in humanity! I hope many kids never have to experience hunger, no matter background they come from! I’d be more than happy to support this initiative all the way from Worcetser!
Stephen –
Wonderful thing you are doing, keep up the good work.
PS. Vote Binface to kick out Frogface
Craig F –
Just seen your interview with James O’Brien on YouTube. Every day I am appalled at the performative cruelty of Reform and their ilk but people like you restore my faith in human nature. Thank you so much for making the world a kinder place.
Michael Brown (verified owner) –
I’m not from the area but heard you speaking on LBC and had to donate a few quid. Keep up the amazing work!
Shaun Warren (verified owner) –
Saw a YouTube video of your interview with James O’Brien. What a wonderful thing you are doing. I live in Northamptonshire where we too have the curse of a Reform council. I hope my small donation helps.
Chris (verified owner) –
Just heard your chat with James O’Brien – you’re doing incredible work. Thank you for reminding everyone what being a decent human being means.
Karen –
Well done for being decent human beings and doing what should never have been removed by those with the power to give kids a decent meal 👏👏
David Ng (verified owner) –
Dignity in the face of callous and thuggish behaviour from those in positions of authority. Well done, your message has certainly reached the other side of the world! Donated, and proud to support this worthy endeavour. May love and kindness always outshine division and hatred. Much love from Australia!
Mike O’Connell (verified owner) –
A good indicator of the state of a country is how they treat their children. Unfortunately, in that department we are lacking. Thank you for supporting our poorest children. Hope my small contribution gives some help to those in need.
Jacqueline Batchelor (verified owner) –
Donated after seeing Simon Harris’ post on Facebook. It’s heartwarming to know that there is some compassion in the world.
Steve –
Saw this on the LBC YouTube channel when you spoke to James. I will be donating for sure, even though I live miles away. Such a great thing you are doing. Also has the added bonus of sticking 2 fingers up to Reform. 👌🏻
vojohmtlzb –
Thank you for your kind donation and message. Its a pleasure to stick it to Reform but I will do it to any council that neglects the poorest children
Lorraine Nalty –
Saw your chat with James and just have to donate . You’re a star thank you for supporting children. We need more people like you
vojohmtlzb –
Thank you 🙏
