Our Story

The Grumpy Cook was built on a simple idea: great food and good coffee should bring people together.

Based in the heart of Hastings, we’re more than just a café. We’re a welcoming space where people can eat well, meet friends, work, relax and feel part of the community.

But alongside serving breakfasts, lunches and proper coffee, we also believe nobody should feel embarrassed about needing help. That’s why we created our Pay It Forward scheme — allowing people to donate meals anonymously so others can enjoy food with dignity and without judgement.

Everything we do is about community, connection and creating a place where everyone feels welcome. Whether you’re stopping by for coffee and cake, joining one of our groups, or simply looking for a friendly face, there’s always a seat for you at The Grumpy Cook.
